TiD&B’s The Conversion Conversation: Lenzman

Posted by on Thursday, November 17th, 2011

In our weekly feature The Conversion Conversation, we delve a little bit deeper, giving you an insight into some of your favourite artists’ most memorable and influential moments, and more importantly, touching upon that moment; when they got hooked on drum and bass, and their lives changed forever.

This week we hear from Lenzman, currently working on his debut album forthcoming on Metalheadz:

“I started off being really into hip hop – this was around the early 90s – and only found out about drum and bass through friends in the UK (I live in Holland).  They sent me mixtapes, introducing me to the likes of LTJ Bukem, and from there I started listening to the stuff coming out on Metalheadz and Full Cycle.

But it wasn’t until actually going out and listening to the music on a proper soundsystem that I really understood what it was about – I think that is when you really get it…there’s nothing like experiencing drum and bass in a club.

At the time, I was visiting London quite a lot as I have friends and family there, and always used to check out the Blue Note for Metalheadz’ Sunday Sessions.  I remember the first time I went – it totally blew me away! From then on, which was around ’96, I started getting more into D&B, buying records and following the scene.

Now, all these years later, I feel really lucky to be able to do what I do for a living, be a part of drum and bass, and making music.”

To catch a feel for the mid-90s ‘Headz vibe which Lenzman describes, check out Goldie’s Essential Mix from 1996, originally broadcasted on BBC Radio 1:
